Azienda U.S.L. Di Reggio Emilia

Azienda USL-IRCCS di Reggio Emilia includes a 900-bed public hospital and five smaller hospitals. In 2011, it was acknowledged as a Research Institute in the discipline of oncology and accredited as a Clinical Cancer Centre by the Organization of European Cancer Institutes (OECI). The Clinical Cancer Center comprises an Oncology Department, with a dedicated Palliative Care and a Psycho-oncology Unit. Cancer patients are followed along their care pathway in close collaboration with the local home care service. Two hospices are also available, admitting advanced patients with complex palliative care needs.

Massimo Costantini

Since September 2015 he is Scientific Director of the Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova-IRCCS, Reggio Emilia (Italy); from 2007 until 2017 he was Visiting Professor in Palliative Care at the Department of Palliative Care, Rehabilitation and Policy, King’s College London(UK). From 1999 to 2012 he has been member of the study group of the Ministry of Health on problems in development of palliative care in Italy. In this period of time, the study group developed the national guidelines and standards for palliative care organization. From 2007 to 2013 he took the responsibility of development and management of the “Regional Palliative Care Network”. The mission of the Unit was to implement, for each of the five Local Health District of Liguria Region, a network of specialized palliative care services, quality assurance and total quality management programs, and, according to different needs, educational programs in palliative care. A Hospital-based Palliative Care Unit with 12 beds was part of the Unit. In April 2013, he moved to the Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova-IRCCS of Reggio Emilia, where he took the responsibility of development and management of the newly established Hospital-based Palliative Care Unit. His research interests are in the areas of palliative care, quality of life, and psycho-oncology. In the area of palliative care, his research activities focused on studying multidimensional problems of terminal cancer patients, and on investigating the effect of palliative care services and other complex interventions on quality of care.

He is author or co-author of over 150 publications on international peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Silvia Di Leo

Psychologist and psychotherapist, from 1997 to 2007 she worked as researcher at the Psychology Service of the National Institute for Cancer Research of Genoa, collaborating in a number of studies on psychosocial issues in oncology and palliative care. From 2008 to 2013 she was director psychologist at the Regional Palliative Care Network, performing clinical activity within the local hospice, training activity addressed to healthcare professionals of the five local palliative care networks and research activity in palliative and end-of-life care, in collaboration with national and international centres. From February 2014 to May 2015 she was consultant at the Palliative Care Unit of Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova-IRCCS in Reggio Emilia. Until June 2015, she is Director psychologist and coordinator of the Psycho-oncology Unit of the Hospital, with the objective of implementing the improvement plan suggested by OECI. She is author of 30 publications on international peer-reviewed scientific journals, with an H-index of 11(Scopus).

Monica Guberti

Dr. Monica Guberti is a nurse with a long standing experience in the nursing field, both as clinical and research nurse. She has been a school nurse for several years, and now collaborates as nursing professor with University of Parma and University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

Since 2017 she works as health professions manager for the Azienda USL-IRCCS of Reggio Emilia. She is Principal investigator in numerous research studies both on clinical and organizational topics.

Dr. Guberti graduated as registered nurse in 1988 in Reggio Emilia, in 1996 she obtained an Bachelor’s Degree in “Management and Teaching in Nursing Science” at University of Bologna and in 2007 a Master’s Degree in “Nursing Science and Obstetrics” at university of Parma. In 2011 she earned a II level University Master Degree in “Promotion and Governance of Research in Healthcare Companies”.

She published several articles in national and international peer reviewed journals. She is member of the Area Vasta Emilia Nord Ethical Committee (AVEN) and of the Emilia Romagna Regional Ethical Committee. She is also member of the “Alessandro Liberati Association – Cochrane Italian Network”.

Elena Turola, PhD

Elena Turola, is a biotechnologist with several years of experience in medical research, both clinical and preclinical.

Since 2018 she works as Clinical Trial Coordinator in the field of Palliative Care and Psycho-Oncology at Azienda USL-IRCCS of Reggio Emilia.

She graduated in 2007 in Medical Biotechnology at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and in 2012 earned a PhD in Medical Pharmacology, Chemotherapy and Toxicology at the University of Milan. In 2016 she attended post-graduate advanced training courses on methodology and regulation of Clinical Trial and on Clinical Trial Start Up including relevant legislation and relationship with ethical committee. She is author of 12 publications on international peer-reviewed scientific journals, with an H-index of 11 (Scopus).
